President's Notes

Hello Friendship Force Dallas Membership,

Spring is on the way. We are looking forward to outbound and inbound journeys, from Dayton, Ohio. Let’s take a quick look back over the last couple of months. Your board has been busy; we had an all-day meeting to review the club’s activities during the past five years. We first looked at the effects that COVID-19 had on the club. Actually, we seem to have come through the pandemic better than most service clubs. We lost some members, our bank balance is lower than before, but overall, we are in pretty good financial condition. The next part of the meeting was planning for the future. Lots of good suggestions and ideas were put forward. We have already started working on many of these, but we need the help of each and every member of the club to put them into practice.Think about where you could contribute and if you’re not sure, give me a call or an email, or contact our membership chair, edward perez. Please remember, that the heart of our organization is developing friendship through omestays.

As a member of the Friendship Force of Dallas, you are entitled to travel with any other club worldwide that has space available. Be sure and look at the catalog on Friendship Force International’s website for a list of all journeys that are available. A list of those clubs with space available in 2023 can be found at https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1Tf2cX72YdZtTgsGjGr-
JaafTPMXxoGL-WI8G2nuMvIA/edit#slide=id.gc6f90357f_0_5. This list may change throughout the month.

We are going to be doing some different types of programs during this year. These may involve trips instead of actual meetings at the library. Other examples are small group dinners or picnics. If you have a suggestion for a meeting idea, please let Paula Rose, our program chair, know about it.

Enjoy your spring and we hope to see you at the next meeting.

Sandy Kaiser, President

Dear Friendship Force Members, As travel continues to rebound, we are finding there are new fractures in the world and people's understanding of one another, and a growing appeal for citizen diplomats like us to stand up for peace. Meet new friends while reconnecting with old ones as we explore the future of Friendship Force and how our movement of peace through friendship will help answer the call.

In friendship,

February Meeting
In February edward perez described everything about Friendship Force at the local, national and international
levels that you might want to know. Because of the early closing of the Library, he was not able to finish his presentation. Here is some additional information from edward:

In case you were not able to attend the All Member Meeting on Feb 11, want a refresher on the presentation, or want to share it with others, I have available a PDF of the presentation along with notes.

Listed below are links to two FFI videos (about 3 mins each), a recording of the meeting (about 50 mins), and a recording about the Southwest Region Field Rep and a demonstration of  FFI's members-only website my.friendshipforce.org (about 31 mins).

I also have a member directory update listing all those who have renewed, rejoined, or joined since Jan 1. You can print it out and insert it into your yearbook. If you have not received a yearbook or this update, let me know and I'll get a copy to you. erperez54@gmail.com

Journeys

International and and Domestic Journey Organizer - Julia Cooper - acjc1804@hotmail.com

I am happy to share with Friendship Force Dallas members that in less than 3 months our club will be heading to Dayton Ohio for a 7 night Journey. We are very excited, as it has been way too long since the last outbound Journey [actually since 2019]. In November we have invited the Dayton club to visit us.

Outbound Journey May 18 – 25, 2023 FF Dallas to FF Dayton, Ohio

There are still a few openings on our outbound exchange to Dayton, Ohio in May.

We will explore Dayton’s aviation history starting with the Wright Brothers through the Air Force flight museum. Annie Oakley’s Museum is located nearby outlining her long career. A visit to an art museum, garden and an outstanding covered bridges driving tour are among the included activities, including a trip to see the famous Thomas Dambo giant trolls!

The trip is now listed on the FFI website and we are getting applications from other clubs. Currently there are seven members of FF-Dallas going on the trip plus others. Sign up now before the spots are gone!

Cost: $450 for 7 nights (Price of transportation not included.) Welcome dinner evening of May 18th. Applications: See the Outbound Exchange follow up email that was sent to you for more information or contact: Barbara Taylor, Dayton Journey Coordinator be_taylor@verizon.net

Journeys are a very important part of Friendship Force philosophy. There is a monetary benefit to those serving as Inbound JCs. See page 34 in your Yearbook for additional information. So, please consider applying for a Journey Coordinator (J.C.) position for our Inbound Journey from Dayton in fall. Should you be new to the role, you’ll get lots of help. Contact Julia at acjc1804@hotmail.com.

Outbound Journey to Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Friendship Force International assigned FF Dallas an International Journey to Kaohsiung Taiwan for May 2022. Unfortunately the Journey has been cancelled at this time and may be rescheduled in 2024.

Meanwhile, there is a Global Journey named ‘Discover Taiwan’ with the Hsinchu Friendship Force club. It is Journey #23144 from Nov 15-26. If any members are interested more information can be found at https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1Tf2cX72YdZtTgsGjGr-JaafTPMXxoGL-WI8G2nuMvIA/edit#slide=id.g185331ed6e5_0_0.

Participants will definitely need to be vaccinated for Covid-19. Recently FFI has posted information on their website concerning the International Conference. It is being held in Dubrovnik, Croatia from October 2nd till 5th. There will be travels offered both before and after the conference.

If you’re having trouble finding other journeys in the FFI website, I can empathize. This is how you do it:
1. Log into Friendship Force International using your log in and password.
2. Ensure you’re on their home screen.
3. Near the top is a ‘carousel’ which changes every 30 seconds, or so. You can wait for the carousel to circle around or press the arrow in the lower right corner until you reach ‘FFI Journey Catalog’. (see the screen shot below)
4. Click on that and you land on a google slide show with the slides down the left side. Each slide is a Journey with its description and name of the Journey coordinator. . 5. Scroll down through those slides to see what’s available

To give you a visual of that process, here’s a video by edward perez which explains his role as Field Rep and shows you how to navigate the My FFI site. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esEcq44R640

my.friendshipForce.org

In 2021, FFI launched my.friendshipforce.org (aka myFF or myFF.org). The idea was to partition the publicly available and member-only information to two different websites
- https://friendshipforce.org/ and
- https://my.friendshipforce.org/ (for members only).

Because of this partitioning, FFI now knows who are members in various clubs, including presidents. Thus, they can email info and announcements about the organization, journeys, virtual experiences, etc. to folks who have signed up at myFF.

Folks who sign up at friendshipForce.org for the public newsletter will only receive general information. As of October 2022, myFF.org has info about journeys, virtual experiences (webinars), conferences, events, clubs & groups, and a help center. In the future, myFF.org will provide ways to communicate with other clubs and other members *and* find and apply for journeys (the "journey marketplace").

If you are one of the 31 Dallas members who have already signed up for myFF, THANKS!

===> If you have not signed up, please do so at https://my.friendshipForce.org (click on the purple "SIGN UP" button). I have an instruction document which goes through the process step-by-step. Let me know if you want a copy or would like assistance in completing the sign up. Once you sign up, FFI assigns you a Member ID - you'll need it to apply for any journey.

Travel Insurance

FFI used to allow a waiver for people who chose NOT to buy travel insurance and to self-insure. They are revising their policy & standard application form - everyone will now be expected to get travel & medical insurance when traveling on any FF journey, either domestic or international. People can get an insurance policy from the FFI recommend insurance company or a company of their own insurance choice. More details as they finalize their policy.
