President's Notes

Dear Friends,

We know that if we don’t like the weather here in Texas, it will soon change. And change if did, from the official -2 and snow to over 70 degrees and sunshine in a week. Hopefully you came through this winter “challenge” without too much discomfort. As I write this, the temperature is over 80 degrees and it feels like spring and new beginnings are just around the corner.

Friendship Force International is having “New Beginnings”. It is in the process of ‘refreshing the FFI Brand’ and updating the website. There are newer color hues on the logo, slightly different fonts and pictures portraying our concept. FFI has brought back an old tag line – “A World of Friends is a World of Peace” which summarizes our mission.

Journeys are still on hold until 2022. Hopefully, by then, we can enjoy the physical togetherness with our Friendship Force friends near and far. In the meantime, please join our monthly Zoom meetings every second Saturday at 3:00pm with interesting programs, every third Thursday at 3:00pm with different discussions and every fourth Tuesday at 2:00pm for the book club. I look forward to seeing you on Zoom.

In Friendship,

Isabella Iverson, President

January – Romania

In January, Mary gave us a descriptive summary of the FFD Journey to Romania in 2009 as a follow up to a visit by the Brasov club to us. They travelled, primarily, in the beautiful area of Transylvania and, to the left, is a list of the places they travelled to, visiting with members of the Brasov club and hearing about what came of some of the orphans incarcerated in orphanages under Nicolae Ceausescu.

Below is a link to information about fallout from the orphanages:

February – Valley House Gallery and Gardens

In February, Cheryl Vogel of the Valley House Gallery on Spring Valley gave a presentation about the history and development of this gallery which is thriving despite being north of the generally accepted ‘Arts District’ area of Dallas.

This gallery is great fun to visit, very eclectic in its offerings and is situated on beautiful grounds.

Club News

The Travel Book Club
Chair: Barbara Taylor - be_taylor@verizon.net

Our February selection was Tales of a Female Nomad by Rita Golden Gelman, a remarkably interesting memoir of a woman who traveled without many plans or money and often stayed with indigenous peoples in remote areas of the world. Thanks to our discussion leader Mary Latham, we discussed our thoughts about Rita’s actions, discoveries and whether we would embark on similar adventures.

"I move throughout the world without a plan, guided by instinct, connecting through trust, and constantly watching for serendipitous opportunities." -- From the Preface

March Book Club takes us along the fabled Silk Road with another intrepid woman, this time on an extensive and intensive bike trip. Lands of Lost Borders: A Journey on the Silk Road, by Kate Harris has won several awards and Ms. Harris is deemed “one of Canada’s modern- day explorers.”
March Travel Book Club: Tuesday, March 30, 2 p.m. via Zoom

April Travel Book Club: Tuesday April 27, 2 p.m. via Zoom
My Love Affair with England, by Susan Allen Toth

If you haven’t joined us before, send me an email at be_taylor@verizon.net and I will forward the Zoom link. You do not have to read the book to join us, come and listen, or better yet, share your experiences of traveling and foster our appetites for getting back out in the world, hopefully later this year!

Thanks, Barb Taylor

After a wild winter, hopefully spring 2021 will be filled with great colors, great weather, and great FFD meetings & events. If you have some ideas for Membership Connections topics and/or locations, please let me know. Also let me know if you'd like to volunteer to organize and/or host any sort of gathering, field trip, outing, etc.

FFI hosts Virtual Experiences presented by FFI staff and members of clubs around the world. There are several "Faces and Places" events. New Members

No new members recently, However Al Currie and Mary Suther have rejoined. I will issue a yearbook update soon. If you have any updates to your contact info, send it so I can include it in the update. Please continue to share with your friends about Friendship Force and invite them to our meetings and events.

Membership Connections

Our "3RD THURSDAY" meetings have been rather popular. Our January and February gatherings covered current activities and, of course, status of our vaccinations. Keep an eye open for upcoming 3rd Thursday announcements. All are welcome to attend. One connection possibility is "Tulipalooza" at the Waxahachie Civic Center run by Poston Gardens (Mar 19-28). Since their gardens are currently closed, they are underwriting a Spring Festival with live entertainment, sponsor tents, food trucks, and a quarter of a million gorgeous tulips blooming from bulbs imported from Holland and planted by Dutch farmers. It's a fundraiser for 12 all-star NorthTexas charities. More info to come. If you have ideas for field trips or picnics for late March or April, send them my way!!

Let People Know About FFDallas!

THANKS to those members who have invited your friends, family, and members of other clubs to our meetings and events. Word of mouth is one of our best ways to attract new members! So, invite folks to attend an upcoming monthly meeting, an event, or an inbound or outbound journey. Just forward our emails to them about the event and/or our newsletters. And if you know of a group that might be interested in learning about FF, please contact me. Or share your experiences on your social media account(s).
