President's Notes

Dear Friends,

As you know Carolyn McMurray, our president, recently had surgery to her right arm so couldn’t write a letter for this edition. Let’s hope her recovery progresses well and speedily.
All the best to you, Carolyn!!

Meanwhile, following is an email sent by Carolyn to all members about our conversation with Jeremi Snook: If you missed our July 16th conversation with Jeremi Snook, you can view it here.

Jeremi is the President and CEO of Friendship Force International. He was gracious enough to spend an hour with us answering our questions about the current state of FFI and their view of the future for the organization and travel in general.

He can be reached at jeremi@friendshipforce.org if you have additional questions for him.
In Friendship,

Carolyn McMurray, President

The Travel Book Club
Chair: Barbara Taylor - be_taylor@verizon.net

The new Travel Book Club has started! We had a good group to discuss our first book, Travels with Charley by John Steinbeck. It was about Steinbeck's 1960 travels across America in a pickup camper. He met many interesting characters with Charley's help and found a rapidly changing American landscape.

Did you know Eisenhower was responsible for our current highway as well as numbering system? During WWII he saw and liked the German autobahn so much he brought the idea back here with the intent to move troops easily across our nation. Thanks to Marty BeHannesey for adding to our discussion!

Please come along on our trips and join us the last Tuesday of each month to discuss travel, adventure and the great people we'll meet along the way.

September's Meeting:
Date: Tuesday, Sep 29 - 2 pm on Zoom
Book: Travel as a Political Act, 3rd Edition (Published 2018)
by Rick Steves
Discussion Leader: Paula Rose

Our book for November is A Year in Provence by Peter Mayle.

You can be in on the selection for October!

If you are interested in joining or dropping in to see what's going on, please send me an email and I'll make sure you're included on the zoom email with the call information. If you have any questions, please email Barbara Taylor at be_taylor@verizon.net.

Speaking of travel books, we have a travel author in our midst! One of our members, Mary Jane Wilson, tells me she has written and published four books about many of the countries in Western and Eastern Europe. For fear of running foul of the IRS, I won’t provide any more information here about how to obtain them, but contact her at maryjaneWilson@att.net or her phone number in our yearbook for further information (I don’t provide phone numbers in this newsletter). I know she’ll be thrilled to tell you about them.

Shuttle Rides
Shuttle Coordinator Aurora Madrigal - aurora487@sbcglobal.net

For those of you still doing some traveling, remember, use our volunteer shuttle service (see page 45 in your yearbook). Make a new friend or learn about a friend's journey/trip during that ride to/from the airport. Send an email to ffdallas-shuttle@googlegroups.com with info on date, time, and place for pickup and/or drop-off. Want to become a shuttle driver? Send an email to Aurora Madrigal aurora487@sbcglobal.net for more info.

Business Cards

Remember - you can order your own FFD business cards from Mary Williams. Give them to people who ask about Friendship Force. This service is free.

You can also let your friends and family know about Friendship Force by sharing yours experiences on your social media account(s). Invite them to attend an upcoming monthly meeting, an event or an inbound or outbound journey. FF of Dallas has a Facebook page that you can like and follow as well as share with your other FB friends. https://www.facebook.com/FriendshipForceDallas/

However, remember Facebook rules: Anyone may post comments or photos on our page, but only posts about FF are acceptable. The club can get in trouble with the IRS for posts that advertise or endorse commercial products or businesses, so please do not do that.

Board Meetings

Board meetings are being held via Zoom. All members are welcome to attend. Please contact our president, Carolyn McMurray for dates, times and a link to Zoom should you wish to attend.

Sunshine News
Chair Cathy Ignatin, cignatin@hotmail.com

Peter Kisner informed us that Brud Kisner, his father, and one of our founding members back in 1993, passed away last Sunday in Temple TX. Brud (Byron, but called "Brud" for "brother" by his younger sister) and his wife Ann moved to Dallas from New York. They were very instrumental in growing our club thru the 1990s and into the 2000s. He introduced FF of Dallas to Paula and me in 2001. Brud & Ann graciously hosted many inbound journey welcome & farewell parties, club picnics, and board meetings at their home. I'm sure you have a Brud story of your own. Here is a link to his obituary:

Here is a photo of Ann and Brud from 2008:
If you would like to send a card to Peter, contact Cathy Ignatin for his address.
Our club is sending a donation to FFI in his memory.

Jody Reed, another previous FF of Dallas member, died recently. She was introduced to FF of Dallas by Jim Bourn in late 2001 or early 2002 and was a member for a little over 10 years.

Here is a copy of the notice from Dignity Memory / Ted Dickey Funeral Home. There are photos in the "From the Family" tab of the "Memories" section (towards the bottom). You can add a memory or condolence as well.

Jody Reed was born February 15, 1948 in Torrington, Wyoming and had an idyllic and loving childhood. Her parents, Dwight and Lois Reed, focused on old-fashioned values of education, kindness, Mother Nature and fostered a high degree of social responsibility and distrust of authority. Humor and the ability to laugh no matter what was always emphasized in the home. ... If she was here, she would want you to remember the jokes she told and how she tried to make you feel good about yourself, no matter what.

Stay well everyone and wear your masks.

Membership News and Updates
by Vice-President Membership - edward perez, erperez54@gmail.com

I've helped several members get Zoom installed on their computer, get Zoom running, and learn how to share their desktop or a program. If you would like some assistance in anything Zoom, please contact me.
I hope that everyone is staying healthy, safe, and upbeat in your physical distancing! It’s been good seeing folks during our online meetings.

Membership Updates

With no meetings, we do not have any new members. However, do continue to share with your friends about Friendship Force and invite them to our online meetings. If you move or change your contact information (phone number, email address(es), etc.), let me know!

On July 1, I emailed a mid-year FFD membership update for your yearbook/directory. Please contact me if you didn't receive it or would like a paper copy.

Meetings Survey and Connections

Thanks to all who responded to the Meetings survey. You all gave us some thoughtful and useful responses. Many folks answered that they'd be willing to meet with other members in person in a small group outside or on a field trip but NOT in a large group at a restaurant (very understandable!). Almost everyone who responded indicated they be willing to attend a web video conference (e.g., Zoom) or attend a group discussion or a social meeting on the web.(*) Also very encouraging was that 16 folks said they would be willing to volunteer to organize and/or host!

If you want to organize and/or host any sort of gathering, field trip, outing, etc., let me know. So, in addition to our monthly meetings be conducted over Zoom, we've started MEMBERSHIP CONNECTIONS - social gatherings on Zoom where we check-in, have a game (e.g., bingo, trivial), discuss a book, etc. If you have an idea for a topic or a meeting, let me know!!

We had a small group attend our first "3RD THURSDAY AT 3PM" meeting on August 20. Lots of catching up and learning about each other and a trivia game about Dallas, Richardson, Plano, McKinney, and Friendship Force. Congrats to our game winners Roger Kaiser, Sandy Kaiser, and Barb Taylor. They each chose some delicious chocolate! Hope to see you at the next 3rd Thursday!

Some of the trivia questions:

- Did you know ... + The Dallas Public Library permanently displays one of the original copies of the
Declaration of Independence, printed on July 4, 1776, *and* the First Folio of William Shakespeare's
  "Comedies, Histories & Tragedies".
- There are TWO universities in Richardson - UT Dallas and the Chicago School of Professional
   Psychology (just west of UTD).
- McKinney was the first town settled in the area in 1839 and Plano was one of the last in 1845.
- Texas has more inland water than any other of the lower forty-eight states.
- How are Friendship Force and the name "Texas" related? "Texas" comes from Hasinai/Caddo word
  "tejas" meaning friends or allies.

Gathering with Friends

As decided by the board, we won't be having any in-person gatherings for the foreseeable future. Keep thinking about options for future gatherings when we can meet again.

- Meals with Friends - enjoy visiting with your friends while enjoying a delicious meal.
- Tastings with Friends - enjoy sampling wines, beer, or beverages along with savory and sweet appetizers/snacks
- Exploring with Friends - check out a new small business, visit nature preserves/gardens, learn some
  local history.

If you would like to host or organize a "Gathering with Friends," please get in touch with me! Let people know about FF Dallas!

THANKS to those members who have invited your friends and family to meetings and events. Word of mouth is one of our best ways to attract new members! So, invite your friends and family to attend an upcoming monthly meeting, an event, or an inbound or outbound journey. Just forward our emails to them about an upcoming meeting and/or our newsletters. Or share your experiences on your social media account(s).

Friendship Force International

Embracing the virtual environment into which we’ve all been thrust, FFI is sending out their ‘FRIENDSHIP CONNECTION’ on a regular basis to all members on their mailing list. If you’re not receiving it, you can provide your contact information on their website at this link

or notify Edward Perez at erperez54@gmail.com and he’ll hook you up.
The Friendship Connection is at https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2#label/Travel%2FFriendship+Force%2FNewsletters/FMfcgxwJWrbbMjxMgJNFmWzdHlFpkTtB
Also, remember we won’t be stuck here forever (although it feels like it at times) so, looking to 2021, Friendship Force International has several Journeys on their website for which you can express interest with the caveat that we have no idea if we’ll be able to go on them. The Journey Coordinator for each Journey is ‘testing the waters’ to check interest.

Check out the new video. This one is in English, but there are links to other languages on the video.
