President's Notes

Hello everyone.

There are so many things I wanted to say in this letter this month, I don't know where to start. So instead of one topic I want to touch briefly on several. I could fill the newsletter on any of these but my letter has limited space and I want to keep this brief or Felicity will take her editor's red pencil to my letter. There is so much that needs to be included in this edition and my ramblings are the least of those. So I will just call out a few items and let you move on to the important items in this edition.

1. We are well into our year and, wow, has it ever been an exciting and challenging one. There have been so many changes, and even more changes are coming. Your Board is still responding to your suggestions and recommendations and finding ways to implement them. Watch what will be happening in future meetings. And, take a close look at this edition of our club's newsletter.

2. What do you think of the changes we have made so far? Are we meeting your needs? If you have more suggestions, contact me or any other club leader and give us your ideas. This is your club, you own it, and your ideas are always welcome. We either change or become stale. There is too much work for our club to do for us not to keep moving forward.

3. One of the things I notice with I take an FF Journey, is how much we and our hosts have in common. Our cultures and norms may differ, but our common values are the same. We are all working for world peace through friendship and understanding of each other. We can celebrate our differences - and wouldn't the world be a boring place is we were all exactly alike - and accept others who have different customs and cultures?

4. We have been very busy with Journeys this year - Sydney, Southern New Jersey, Birmingham and two - both inbound and outbound - with Saskatoon. There are so many activities to keep everyone's time filled. Please volunteer; there are so many options. Remember next year we have two great outbound Journeys to Australia in the spring and Israel in the fall. If you would like more information on either or both, contact me for Australia and Michael Wald or Haiya Feder-Naftali for Israel. These Journeys are the heart of our club and your participation is what makes them so valuable.

Southern NJ Outbound
April 22-29, 2017

Located in the Delaware Valley in Southern New Jersey across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, the region features historical sites such as the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Valley Forge and excellent art, natural history and science museums.

On April 22nd 12 members of Dallas FF headed to Southern New Jersey.

We visited Independence Hall and saw the Liberty Bell and Congress Hall. We went to Winterthur Museum and Longwood Gardens. We all travelled by bus to Valley Forge and had a very interesting day with an excellent guide. We definitely made many new friends.

We all had a wonderful time starting with a welcome party “a taste of Philadelphia“ in a members’ house and ending with a farewell dinner with live music.

Birmingham AL Inbound, June 3 – 9

Cathy Ignatin is the Host Coordinator for our next inbound group from Birmingham AL. She has a tentative schedule that she has sent to Birmingham Ambassador Coordinator Vicki Smith . They hosted us last year and we had a wonderful week with these gracious people. Let us show them a great week in Dallas!

6:00 - Welcome dinner at Chimney Hill Clubhouse, 9223 Emberglow, Dallas (bring side dishes).

Sun., June 4th - Free day, with option to tour AT&T Stadium tour 11:30 am (organized by edward perez - erperez@acm.org ) and any other sights not scheduled that ambassadors might want to visit on their own.

Monday, June 5th: 10:00 am - Meet at Arboretum for garden walk.

Tuesday, June 6th: McKinney Day
10:00 am - Meet at Bill Smith’s iconic Diner,  1510 W. University Dr (Hwy 380) for brunch.
   Driving tour of early homes.
12 Noon-  Self tour and shopping at McKinney Square
2:00 pm - Wine tasting at Lone Star Winery, 103 E. Virginia on the Square
Evening - Small group dinners at time and locations arranged by host.

Wed. June 7th: Downtown Dallas Day
9:45 am - Meet at Union Station and be on DART bus for 10:00am departure. Please ride DART downtown. Stops include Pioneer Plaza, Thanksgiving Square, Arts District, Klyde Warren Park, Dallas Museum of Art.
1:00 pm - Lunch at the DMA
Afternoon and evening are free in case Ambassadors want to take in more of downtown.
Dinner - Perfect time for Ambassadors to treat their home host to dinner, either downtown or elsewhere.

Thurs. June 8th: Fort Worth Day
8:30 am - Meet at Valley View Mall for departure by 8:45 for Ft. Worth
10:00 am - Arrive at Stockyards in time to buy tickets and use facilities
10:15 am - Film on the history of the Stockyards and tour
11:30 am - Longhorn cattle drive and shopping opportunity
12:30 pm - Gather for drive to Sundance Square for lunch
1:00 pm - Lunch at Reata Restaurant, 310 Houston St., Fort Worth

Journeys 2018

International Journeys for 2018

The Board of Directors has now appointed the Coordinators (formerly Exchange Directors) for our 2018 International Journeys (formerly Exchanges).

In March/April of 2018 we have a Journey going to AUSTRALIA, one week in Sydney and one week in Gold Coast. Sydney visited Dallas the last week in February this year and Gold Coast was here in Dallas in 2014. Both clubs are friends of ours and this should be a great reunion. The Ambassador Coordinator is Mary Latham and she should announce dates (in Spring 2018) soon.

Our second Journey in October of 2018 will be to CENTRAL ISRAEL This is a country that we have never visited and has very limited hosting availability. We are lucky to get this. We thank Haiya Feder-Naftali for finding this for us.The Ambassador Coordinators for this trip are Michael Wald who will announce the dates, and Haiya Feder-Naftali.

If you would like to express an interest for either of the Outbound Journeys, or have any questions about either or both, please contact the Ambassador Coordinator.

We are still in the preparation stages, but please reserve those dates on your calendar. Both will be interesting and enjoyable journeys. And quite different.


Dallas Global Journey - 2018

The international Inbound Journey for 2018 will be the ART AND ARCHITECTURE GLOBAL JOURNEY scheduled for May 15th – 22nd, 2018. The Host Coordinator for that is Felicity Sentance. That Journey, in particular, is going to need a lot of assistance but it will be a chance for us to do a lot of touring and activities with the visitors and go to places in Dallas that we may rarely have gotten around to visiting ourselves.

These Ambassador and Host Coordinators are eligible for reimbursement for at least some of their costs. See the Club Policies on page 37 or the Yearbook for 2017.

Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)

With the turmoil in certain parts of the world and natural disasters occurring without warning, some people are hesitant to travel abroad. Friendship Force members will still travel, but they travel as informed travelers after fully evaluating the risks. A rumor is not enough to hold back a determined FF member. But what if something unexpected happens after you leave? What if there is civil unrest, or a revolution? What if a volcano suddenly erupts or there is an earthquake or other natural disaster? What if your family back home desperately needs to reach you?

How can I get help in an emergency outside the US?

One thing every informed traveler should do before departing or even buying a ticket, is check with the US Department of State (DOS) for any travel warning. Currently the DOS has advisories for Lebanon, El Salvador, Nigeria and North Korea. There is also a broad warning for all international travelers to exercise caution.

Conditions change suddenly so travelers need to keep up with what is happening even after they are abroad. An easy way to do that is to enroll in the DOS STEP program. It only takes a few minutes set up an account. Then you simply update information each time you travel. If you do not want to set up an account, you can register for one trip.

The nearest Embassy or Consulate will then know that you are in its area.

How will DOS help me in an emergency?

Once you have registered your trip, you will receive notices and information from DOS as conditions change in your destination country. When you are in the country, you will continue to get updates. Keep your mobile handy and charged. On our exchange to Santiago, Chile, last year, our members who had registered with STEP received notice of a student demonstration in downtown Santiago. Our members were then able to ask our hosts if this would be a problem for our activities that day as the group was touring downtown.

Other assistance from DOS will depend on the nature of the crisis. You may be advised to leave the country or seek shelter. If you are advised to leave you should use commercial transportation or follow DOS instructions. In extreme emergencies when commercial transportation is not available, DOS will assist with your evacuation. You will be transported to nearest safe location, not necessarily back to the US. And, one other thing, you must reimburse DOS for the cost of the evacuation in an amount of a commercial ticket. That is a small price to pay to be able to leave quickly and safely.

If you lose your passport, you can always go to the nearest Embassy or Consulate to get a replacement and if registered in STEP, the Embassy has your information and knows you are in the country.

Shuttle Service

A BIG THANKS to our six Shuttle Drivers for providing  rides to/from the airport

And a BIG THANKS to our members who requested rides and contributed $800 to our club (about 13% of total club revenue).

Remember, this shuttle service is available to any FF of Dallas member who needs transportation from their home to either airport or from the airport to your home. You can also use this service to destinations other than airports. After your ride, you make a donation to FF of Dallas.

If you need a ride, send an email to ffDallas-shuttle@googleGroups.com [or call 214-699-7574] and all club members who are shuttle drivers will receive your request.

If you would like to be a shuttle driver, contact edward perez and he'll add you to the list. Take this opportunity to help out your club while meeting and learning about your fellow club members. You are not obligated to handle every request, but please do what you can.

FFD Name Badge Policy

Approved on Feb 14, 2017, this policy states that the club will provide new members of FF Dallas with one name badge without charge. Members may purchase an additional or replacement name badge for $14.00 each or a price approved by the Board. If you need a replacement or a new badge, let edward perez know (erperez@acm.org). He will request our badge supplier, Recognition USA, to make a magnetic style badge for you and mail it to your mailing address on file.


A BIG THANKS to all who invited their friends to our recent meetings. I've sent them information about our club and events. As programs and exchanges are great ways to learn about our club and Friendship Force, please encourage your friends to participate in the Birmingham Inbound Journey in early June as well as to attend our upcoming monthly meetings/events. And remember to attend our events and participate in our Journeys as well. Keep involved in your club and help spread the word about Friendship Force!

I will be scheduling a New Member meeting in either late May or early June. If you have ideas for places to hold the event, please let me know. And if you have any ideas for places where we can meet for "Friendship Gatherings," please let me know…… some examples are:
• Lunches during the daytime (restaurants, picnics, pot lucks)
• Dinners during weeknights (pot lucks or restaurants)
• Outings to arts venues, plays/musicals/concerts, historical parks, festivals/activities, wineries/breweries

New Members

I introduced Camille and Jerry Daugherty in the last newsletter (they joined FFD in December, 2016 & contact info is in the yearbook) – here is a short biography:

Camille and Jerry (Gerald) married Jan, 1966 and they moved to Dallas, Texas in Jan, 1967.
Camille says the best investments they ever made were for her to obtain her Masters of Business Administration (Accounting) while Gerry graduated with a BBA.

After graduation, Camille went to work for a local CPA firm and, in 1980, opened her own CPA firm which she had for 35 years. Gerry joined the army and then the active Reserves. He worked for Travelers Insurance, Howmet Aluminum, Home Depot and ran his own business for nine years until joining Camille’s company as office manager. He is retired while she is semi-retired.

In 1998 Lance, their oldest son, got a job in Paris, France and Camille made reservations. He taught them how to travel abroad and they have continued going to numerous wonderful places. Camille enjoys travel, the theater, cooking, taking piano lessons, movies and socializing with family and friends. They have two sons, Lance and Justin and two delightful grandchildren, Pierce age 13 and Gabby age 13.

They look forward to getting involved in the Friendship Force, traveling with existing friends and making new friends.

Another BIG Friendship Force of Dallas WELCOME to our three newest members – Sharon lives in McKinney and found out about FF from Sharri McIntosh. Kevin & Peggy live in the Las Colinas area and are friends of Paula and edward from way back; they also know the BeHanneseys.

Sharon Rettmeier (who plans to Home Host in June for the Birmingham Journey)

Sharon was born in Rockingham, NC and moved to Charlotte NC when she was 7 yrs. of age. After she completed high school, she moved to Myrtle Beach SC where she eventually met her husband. Since he was in the military, Sharon has lived in many countries. After he retired from the military in the late 1980s, they moved to Allen TX. She was a psychiatric registered nurse for many years. About 11-12 years ago, they moved to McKinney to be near her daughter and family - her other two children and her nine grandkids live nearby. Although she has traveled quite a bit in her life, she would like to see more of the USA as well as Australia and South America. In addition to reading and journaling, she is involved in the McKinney Active Agers 55+ group as well as several Meetup groups.

Kevin & Peggy Yard

Kevin & Peggy have lived in Texas since the early 80s. Peggy grew up in New York City and moved to Houston for a marketing job in 1983. Kevin grew up in Erie, PA, attended Univ. of Pittsburgh and Penn St before moving to Dallas for an environmental engineering job in 1981. They have two children - Colleen 26 and Cameron 18. They traveled quite a bit back to visit families in Pennsylvania and New York, but really enjoy visiting Lake Travis outside of Austin TX. They enjoy going to theatre productions, golfing (Kevin) and exercise (Peggy), and are involved with Dallas First Unitarian Church (previously attended Horizon Unitarian Universalist in Carrollton). They are interested in FF journeys to various parts of the USA as well as internationally.

Hope all is well with you.
For the winter holidays we were in Lanzarote [Canary Islands], as usual. Unfortunately we had to rebook our return flight, Erich had a stroke. He is now in a nursing home, will never walk again, will never live in his own home again.
He has made peace with his situation. The care in the Home is excellent. He participates in all the activities and likes the food.
We are so grateful about the wonderful times we had, the places we visited and the friends we made. Erich turned 87 in February. May 5th is our 14th wedding anniversary.

We have many talented members in our group! Please notify Felicity if you know of anyone with a story to tell. Here is a submission by Ray Enstam our "Coordinator in Chief" of International Journeys:

Adventures with the Friendship Force of Dallas
by Raymond Enstam - Member since 1996 – 20 years!

I have been asked to write about an unexpected adventure from traveling with Friendship Force. Many years ago I went on a home stay exchange to Trujillo, Peru and while there came upon a book in common use in the schools of Peru to teach about the history of Peru in the Amazon. It was named "Sangama: A Story of the Amazon Jungle." It was published in 1942 by Arturo D. Hernández in Spanish. I found out that it also had been published in French and German in the 1950s, but never in English. I thought that the English language readers ought at least to have the opportunity to read this work. The daughter of the family I was staying with is an attorney and she helped me find the family of the author (then deceased). I contacted them and with her help negotiated worldwide publishing rights in English to all the works of Hernández, as well as the Spanish rights in North America.

Checking on his other writings, I found that in the 1930s he had interviewed a young woman who had been kidnapped in 1927 by a fierce tribe of cannibals from the jungle interior. She had been given to one of the warriors and had spent four years as a captive before her daring escape. She learned their language and was treated as a member of this tribe, observing things no outsider had ever been witness to and could not witness without changing the tribe by their very presence. Hernández wrote a book based upon her time in the tribe. The book is entitled "Selva Trágica: Captive in the Jungle." This book had been available in Spanish and French, but never in English. Working with the license agreement that I have, I have translated both of these books into English and they are now available on Amazon. I have also published and sell on Amazon the original Spanish of these two books.

When I first joined the Friendship Force I never imagined where this worldwide organization could lead me. There is a world out there to discover. You just have to look.

On January 23, 2017, Friendship Force International received the Annual Grantee of Merit Award for 2017 by the Open World Leadership Center. The Annual Grantee of Merit Award is presented to organizations who have demonstrated outstanding service to Open World Leadership Center.

Keynote Speaker: Benedict Allen, TV Presenter, Explorer and Author

We are proud to announce additions to our speaker lineup, including industry experts in the fields of volunteer travel, nonprofit management, public relations, and philanthropy:

- Sucheta Rawal is an award-winning food and travel writer, author, cooking instructor and philanthropist. As the founder and executive director of Go Eat Give, Sucheta’s personal mission is to raise awareness of global cultures through meaningful travel, good eating, and community interaction. She founded Go Eat Give as a blog in 2011, through which she wanted to educated readers about sustainable and volunteer traveling, learning about authentic cuisines, and engaging with locals. Go Eat Give is now a 501(c)(3) registered non-profit serving audiences across 120 countries. Sucheta has traveled to 67 countries (and counting) bringing back exclusive experiences, which she shares through writing, speaking engagements and cooking classes.

- Andrew Bowen, APR (Accredited in Public Relations), is the founder and principal at Clearview Communications and Public Relations Inc., a multi-disciplinary PR/Marketing firm Bowen founded in 2002. Bowen’s professional PR experience includes executive positions at two international marketing/advertising/public relations agencies, Ketchum and Fletcher Martin Ewing, where he led the Public Affairs Teams. His expertise encompasses all aspects of traditional and social media, media relations, newswriting, commentaries, speech writing, public affairs, crisis communications/crisis management and reputation management.

- Jeanine Tousignant - President of Jeanine & Company, Jeanine Tousignant's philosophy is “Give where your heart is” when it comes to working with and advising donors and organizations about philanthropy and fundraising. Jeanine has worked with individual donors, companies, and foundations for over 20 years to help them maximize their giving to match their values. She also specializes in shaping nonprofit fundraising programs to match the right givers with the mission that matters to them. With this fundraising and relationship expertise, Jeanine is helping FFI clubs maximize their fundraising techniques and provides information about legacy giving (planned giving) to FFI members.

Capital Campaign

We are proud to announce the official launch of Friendship Force International’s 40th Anniversary Capital Campaign!

As members, we wanted you to be the first to learn of this exciting, new anniversary campaign!

Around the globe, you all have marked this remarkable milestone in grand style by holding more than sixty 40th Anniversary Celebrations. By launching the 40th Anniversary Capital Campaign today, we are hoping to build on the momentum of your incredible celebrations to propel Friendship Force forward - to the next 40 years and beyond!

The campaign will invest in Friendship Force now and launch new initiatives for the future – with the common theme of planting the seeds of friendship. Our objective is to raise $1,000,000 to accomplish the following three goals:

Goal 1: Expand our core by strengthening worldwide membership and building new clubs
Goal 2: Engage future leaders by providing new programs for youth and families
Goal 3: Activate a new socially-responsible travel network

We are grateful for our FFI community’s wonderful support through initiatives like the “I’m In!” Campaign and annual donations over the years. For the 40th Anniversary Campaign, we will be seeking support from within our membership and from new sources such as like-minded companies, foundations, and donors who share the values of Friendship Force.

Remember that you are welcome to join other clubs on their exchanges if there is room. When you travel with another club you help fill their seats and make new friends in another club as well as your destination club. If you are interested in any of these exchanges, contact the Host Coordinator ASAP. The decision for a Journey to go or to cancel occurs at least 90 days preceding a scheduled date. Notice of remaining seats can be out of date as Journeys fill and there are cancellations. Contact the Host Coordinator for the most current information.

Please contact clubs well in advance, as an exchange may cancel if the Host Coordinator doesn’t know about your interest.

How do you find your way around in a strange city?

We used to get fold up maps that you had to spread on a table to read. Remember trying to read them in a car or while walking on the street? Things have really changed. Now it’s apps you download to your smart phone. You can easily walk around a strange city or drive through a new area while guided by your phone. How simple and easy!

One app we recently used in New York City that really helped was KickMap, a map of the New York subway system. It can be a little intimidating to think about riding the subway around such a big city with so many different trains but KickMap was all we needed. It was easy to download and install. It was simple and easy to use. Select your location and your destination and the app tells you which train you need to take, where the nearest station is located, whether there is any transfer needed and, if so, where to make the transfer to the next train. It also advises how long it will take to reach your destination and the time your train will depart. You also get the schedule of all possible trains, station information and a street map. At only $2.99, it turned out to be the best bargain we had for our trip.

KickMap also has maps for other transit systems, including Washington, D.C. and the London Tube. KickMap is not the only app of this kind. There are many others. If you are planning a trip to a new city, search your app store for street maps or transit system maps for your destination. Using an app is much simpler and easier that trying to deal with paper maps in a book or that you have to continuously unfold and refold.

There are many other apps and websites that make travel more convenient and planning your trips easier. If you have suggestions or recommendations for apps or websites that have made you travels easier, please share them with other members of our club. I am giving a big Thanks to Sharri McIntosh and her son-in-law to be for recommending KickMap New York to us before this trip. Using this app, we navigated the New York subway system like native New Yorkers.

A travel tip from FF Houston

My colleagues in Kuwait tipped me off to a good website to plan your flights: Matrix - ITA Software by Google: https://matrix.itasoftware.com/

To my knowledge, it works with all commercial airlines; it can do complicated routings and fare structures; it gives nice visual graphics comparing several routings. On the webpage, you can hover over each of the bar elements to see details. You can't buy tickets on it, but you can then use the results on your regular website to book your flights. If you are using a travel agent, it gives the exact fare construction details so they can get you the same thing.
