President's Letter

Paula RoseHello Friendship Force Dallas!

Fall may be hard to contemplate here in the dog days of summer, but it IS coming. And we have so much to look forward to. First, our Sept 8 meeting where we will hear about the exchange to Germany led by Zia Shamsy. Also we'll have election of officers at that meeting. All the present officers have volunteered to serve another year if elected. If you are interested in serving on the board, let Ray Enstam know.

Of course you know the Morganton exchange was cancelled for October due to much illness etc on the part or those coming. Hopefully we can reschedule for next year. Felicity Sentance, our programs chair has set up a nice mixer at Dimassi's Mediterranean Buffet for our October13 meeting. For those who haven't been there, Dimassi's is a HUGE buffet with dessert and drinks included in the price. Good food.

In November many of us will be participating in the FF World Conference in New Orleans. There is an after conference homestay and we will have Canadians, Brazilians and Americans here in Dallas for that. There are no formal activities though, just fun with participating families...BeHanneseys, Klostermans are hosting AND I'm still looking for a host for one American lady.

Many thanks to Felicity Sentance and Georgia Sigalos for arranging our July and August small group activities in homes. These events are a great way to get to know our own club members. We have so many new members which is great. Several are going to New Zealand with us in March. Thanks again to Isabella Iverson our Membership Chair for doing such a good job.

There will be no Board meeting in August. The next Board meeting will be September 9. See you September 8 at our general meeting.

Inbound Exchange - Morganton
The Morganton Exchange scheduled for October has been canceled due to a death in the group, a stroke and various other family issues causing people to drop out.

Taupo and Nelson, New Zealand

NZ flagPaula Rose, ED for the outbound to New Zealand in March 2014, announced that the exchange filled immediately after FFI’s monthly e-mail listed it. She now has a waiting list. Balances of fees are due November 15. Payments for the optional tour will be handled according to travel agency policies. To be on the waiting list, contact her at paularose2000@hotmail.com.


Tuxla/Guttierez, Mexico

Tuxla festivalMichael and Jackie Wald were appointed Exchange Directors for the inbound from Mexico in May of 2014. Contact one of them if you like to chair a committee or help with the exchange in any way. mwald999@gmail.com or jwald999@yahoo.com.

2015 International Exchanges

The 2015 exchange matching request process will begin soon. If you have requests of places you would be willing to visit, let Ray Enstam know. The Board will vote on the requests to be submitted to FFI at the September Board meeting.

Domestic Exchanges 2014-2015

Dale Klosterman has arranged an outbound domestic exchange for next year (2014) with the Columbia Cascade club (Oregon) and an inbound from this club in 2015. Dale is working on finding a second club we could visit near the Oregon club, and also a US club who would like to visit us in fall of 2014, with our outbound to that club in 2015. More details later.


Completed Exchanges

Germany Outbound

Ambassadors from our outbound exchange to Gelsenkirchen and Jena, Germany have returned and are busy putting together a presentation for our September meeting. The group visited Bavaria with a dip into Austria, a week homestay with the Jena club in the Harz Mountains, a week homestay with the Gelsenkirchen club in the Ruhr Valley and a short visit to Berlin. Zia Shamsy will be sharing their photos and stories at the September meeting.


Update on Panama

During the outbound exchange to Panama our club met with twenty people in Santiago and eight people in Panama City. The goal was to create interest in establishing ED Michael Wald reports that there is interest in starting FF clubs in Panama but there are difficulties in communicating and following up with people he met there, and the need to have the club by-laws translated. He is getting help with forms that will be helpful to Santiago. Michael would like to work out a low-cost trip for some of these people to come to the U.S. and see how FF works. The Santiago group may join the Mexico group for their inbound to FFD in 2014.

The Nominating Committee of the Friendship Force of Dallas for the year 2013, consisting of Raymond Enstam, Zia Shamsy and John Whaley, presents the following nominations for officers of Friendship Force of Dallas for 2014:

Meeting Questionnaire

Felicity Sentence received 27 responses to the meeting questionnaire. The overwhelming majority want to keep the big meetings with programs interspersed with some small gatherings either in homes or in ethnic restaurants.

If you would like to volunteer to help organize meetings, contact Felicity Sentance at fsentance@gmail.com. Helpers are always needed and appreciated.

Ideas regarding locations are also very welcome. remembering the criteria mentioned on the questionnaire. We need a space that is:
Sufficiently large and preferably a separate room (or at least well away from distractions), has access to electrical outlets, has access to good parking, is free, not upstairs and preferably closed on Sundays. It would be great to keep the meal price (including drink and tip) less than about $15.00, but realistically we are frequently going to go over that amount.

Shuttle Service

Remember to support our airport shuttle service. The passenger(s) make a donation to the club of $30 per ride ($40 north of Plano), helping our club. Directions are on page 42 in your yearbook to request a ride or to be a driver.


July and August Events

While many of our members were traveling, those of left in Dallas got together informally. Thanks to the hosts for the July Small Group Dinners, who were: Mary Williams, Julia Cooper, Paula Rose and edward perez, and Ed and Dora Stahl. New members and seasoned members met, ate and conversed. The food was good and the conversation even better. Thanks to Felicity Sentance for making arrangements.

Desserts bookHosts for the August Sweet and Savory Sampler were Lee and Mary Latham, Marty and Diana BeHennessey, and Carolyn and Sam Harris. Members brought small dishes to share - appetizers, desserts and snacks. It was a good opportunity to visit informally and try some new dishes. Thanks to the hosts and to Georgia Sigalos who arranged it.

Mac and Gaby MackenzieMac and Gaby Mackenzie moved at Christmastime last year to a retirement community in Florida. Contact the webmaster for their current info.

They cruised to and from Europe in May, visiting friends and family in England and in Germany, then visited Wolfsburg Germany, where they visited Gisela and Adelfried Pobloth who were here with that club quite a few years back. They joined the Baton Rouge club for an exchange to Halle in old East Germany and to Vienna, Austria – Gaby’s birthplace. They celebrated the farewell dinners at both host clubs New Orleans style with a Mardi Gras parade wearing masks and throwing out the customary beads – a big success!! Gaby said, “It’s always good to renew these long-term friendships and we had a great time.”



Lee an Mary LathamAfter Mary’s recent retirement from American Heart Association, she and Lee took off for their dream trip to Africa. They visited game parks in South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Kenya to see “the big five” and many other native animals and birds, having a marvelous experience.


New Member Profiles

We welcome new members who have joined the club this year. We’ll feature a few at a time so you can get to know them better. This month we feature Haiya Naftali.

Haiya NaftaliHaiya is a retired Dallas ISD Special Education teacher. Born in Maryland, she has also lived in Buffalo, New York and Israel, but she has spent most of her life in Dallas. Of course, she loves to travel but she also plays Bridge, reads a lot, loves cinema, scuba diving and horseback riding whenever she gets the chance. She enjoys history and art museums and says she is “a slave to a Basset named Star.” She is thrilled to have found Friendship Force and plans on being an active member.

Regional Conferences

2013 US Regional Meetings

Regional meetings for US club members will be held in New Orleans at 5 pm on Friday November 22, led by our regional Field Representative Bob Duncan from Baton Rouge. This is our opportunity for our regional clubs to meet prior to the International Conference.

The 2013 FFI World Conference promises to one of our largest conferences ever and an amazing global event with 26 countries represented so far and registration topping 600. It will be held at the Astor Crowne Plaza Hotel New Orleans – 739 Canal St at Bourbon. Conference fee is $300.00 plus lodging. 2014 International Conference

AucklandPlanning is already underway for next year’s World Conference in Auckland, New Zealand. The conference will run from October 14 to 16, 2014, and it be held at the Rendezvous Grand Hotel Auckland. Registration will begin in early 2014.


2015 International Conference

FFI is thrilled to announce that the 2015 World Conference will be held in Vancouver, Canada. The conference will take place September 11 to 14, 2015. More details will be available as the time approaches.


FFI News

The FFI Board of Directors will meet in New Orleans prior to the FFI World Conference, November 23-25, 2013. At this meeting, three new board members will be elected to a four-year term that begins January 2014. They will also select a member of the year and a club of the year who will be honored during the convention.

Policies approved earlier this year have been updated to be more readable and are available at www.thefriendshipforce.org.


Exchanges of Other Clubs

Remember that there are some wonderful opportunities to go on exchanges with other clubs, including the trip to Long Island and Baltimore with the Fort Worth Club in October.

There is also an Australia/ New Zealand trip being organized by the Houston club for 2014. More details later. Jean Porter is the ED. jp@nporter.com.
